Northern Mozambique, after nearly 25 years of isolation, re-established itself as one of southern Africa’s most intriguing and attractive tourist destination. Now with new hotels opening, improvements being made to transport links and with the re-stocking of its reserves and national parks.
Before 1975, the country was a favourite retreat for visitors from neighbouring countries. Mozambique is a melting pot of different cultures and traditions. With mosques, churches and forts dating back to the Portuguese and Arab rule from 16th century onwards. No wonder that Mozambique is one of the most exciting cultural destinations on the continent.
Our trips through northern Mozambique mean adventure. Adventure since the tourist infrastructure has not yet been fully developed. You will visit the most remote parts of Africa. In addition you will visit Mozambique coast which is a real historic treasure.
For those with an adventure spirit and a willingness to be open to and respectful of local custom, this unspoiled region can be one of Mozambique’s most rewarding.
Day 1 (06 June 16) Arrive at Nampula airport. Meet and transfer to Hotel Residential Premavera for overnight.
Nampula is the capital city of Nampula Province in Mozambique. It the third largest city in Mozambique after Maputo and Beira. It is home to the Mozambique National Ethnographic Museum, several markets, cathedrals and mosques.
It is also the center of business in northern Mozambique. Nampula has a few western style hotels, restaurants and shopping centres. It also has a small international airport connecting to Nairobi in Kenya and Johannesburg in South Africa, and is a transport hub for local transport in Northern Mozambique; however, it is not noted as a tourist destination.
Under Portuguese rule this province was named Moçambique but with independence, the name Mozambique was used for the entire country and the province renamed for its capital.
After lunch, proceed on hotel inspections.
Day 2 (07 June 16) Drive to Ilha de Mozambique, about 3 hours away. Check in at Hotel Escondindinho for overnight on BB terms.
Ilha de Mozambique is one of the World’s Heritage Sites. It is from this tiny island that moderm Mozambique got it’s name. Ilha de Mozambique is a cultural melting pot. African, Arabian and Portuguese. Walk through the small streets and mix with the local people. Fresh sea food is bought directly from the fishermen.
Escondindinho is a charming Portuguese Poussada fully renovated with ensuite facilities and a separate good restaurant.
After lunch, proceed on hotel inspections:

Day 3 (08 June 16) From Ilha de Mozambique to Pemba town, Ulala Lodge, HB
This morning, at 07h00, a 7 to 8 hour drive to Pemba town. Lunches in own account. Dinner & overnight at Ulala Lodge, FB
The coastal town of Pemba lays claim to some of the finest coral reefs in all of the Southern Africa. Divers and snorkelers enter clear depths and swim among a profusion of exotic fishes. As you might expect, the seafood is rich and plentiful enough to take to your taste buds on holiday of a life time.
Ulala is an Eco Lodge located on one of the most beautiful beaches in Mozambique, Murrébué Beach. It is in Pemba (25 minutes from the city centre, 20 minutes from the airport), in the North of Mozambique.
It is a small, isolated, exclusive place, with 6 rooms in beautiful and charming bungalows, all with a view on the Indian ocean. Great care has been taken to use local materials (coco leaves, bamboos, teak decks, red sand) in all construction, delicately blended with modern facilities to provide comfort with a unique style.

Day 4 (09 June 16) Morning at leisure. Then at 10h00, depart for Tanganyanga on the north east coast for boat to Ibo Island. It takes about 3h30 . 15h00, boat transfer to Ibo Island during high tide. The transfer is roughly one hour. On arrival in the island, check in at Miti Miwiri Lodge on BB terms.
Explore an ancient island where Muslim traders operated in the 15th century, before it became a major slave market and trading post for the Portuguese in the 18th century. Historic buildings, 3 forts and a beautiful old Catholic Church still remains. Ibo provides a chance to interact with the amazing rural people and exchange cultural differences. Traditional silversmiths still operate from the main port, and you are free to wander about this beautiful island and explore. Optional crab and fishing expeditions, mangrove excursions, snorkelling, swimming and historical dhow cruises.
Day 5 (10 June 16) From Ibo Island proceed to the Sandbank and camping at Matemo. Matemo Island forms part of the pristine Quirimbas Islands and is located northeast of Ibo island, in northern Mozambique, about 100 km from the city of Pemba. It is approximately 24 square kilometres in area, with palm groves and beaches.
It contains five villages, inhabited by native Mozambicans.
Day 6 (11 June 16) From Matemo return boat to Tanganyanga and by car to Mocimboa du Praia for accommodation at Chez Natalie . The drive to Mocimboa is about 6 hours.
Chez Natalie Lodge is a French-style lodge and restaurant, set at the main gate of the Quirimbas National Park in the Bay of Mocimboa da Praia. Established 10 years ago in the middle of the bush and overlooking the bay and the mangrove forest, it has charming and comfortable bungalows, the perfect base from where to explore Northern Moçambique. Either you are passing by or looking for a nice accommodation, Chez Natalie is the right place to start discovering the most remote and beautiful destination in East Africa.
Day 7 (12 June 16) From Mocimboa drive to Rovuma River which is the natural border between Mozambique & Tanzania and cross into Tanzania. Then drive to Mtwara and overnight at The Old Boma , FB
(Until 2001, the Rovuma River, which is the natural border between Mozambique and Tanzania, was bridged by dugout canoe only. Nowadays, a ferry, capable of taking vehicles as well is operating. Crossing the Rovuma River is just possible at high tide. In case the ferry does not operate, then we make a detour and from Tanganyanga we drive to Mueda Cape Delgado and then to Masasi.
The Old Boma Hotel in Southern Tanzania, a national monument, is a 100 year old fort, beautifully restored into a comfortable hotel with up to date facilities, whilst retaining many original features and charm. The Old Boma is located on the side of a hill overlooking the Indian Ocean, providing breathtaking views from dawn to dusk. Hotel facilities include a large swimming pool surrounded by Frangipani and Flame trees. A pool side bar is available, with the Old Courthouse providing shaded seating.
Day 8 (13 June 16) From Mtwara to Kilwa Masoko, Kilwa Pakaya
From Mtwara to Kilwa Masoko takes about 4-5 hours by car. Overnight at Kilwa Pakaya.
Kilwa Masoko is of interest primarily as a base for visiting the ruins of the 15th century Arab settlement at nearby Kilwa Kisiwani. Otherwise there are pretty few beaches on the outskirts of town. Afternoon free.
Day 9 (14 June 16) Kilwa Masoko, Kimbilio Lodge. Kimbilio Lodge is located on the Kilwa beach in Masoko Bay, just on the waterfront, in one of the most beautiful and still unspoiled corners of the world.
The beach is candid white, and the water is crystal clear. Kilwa is a paradise for diving, yet its location is also ideal for excursions in the inland.

The Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani
The remains of two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near the coast. From the 13th to the 16th century, the merchants of Kilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passéd through their hands.
Kilwa Kisiwani, was occupied from the 9th to the 19th century and reached its peak of prosperity in the13th and 14th centuries. In 1331-1332, the great traveler, Ibn Battouta made a stop here and described Kilwa as one of the most beautiful cities of the world.
Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara were Swahili trading cities and their prosperity was based on control of Indian Ocean trade with Arabia, India and China, particularly between the 13th and 16th centuries, when gold and ivory from the hinterland was traded for silver, carnelians, perfumes, Persian faience and Chinese porcelain. Kilwa Kisiwani minted its own currency in the 11th to 14th centuries. In the 16th century, the Portuguese established a fort on Kilwa Kisiwani and the decline of the two islands began.
The remains of Kilwa Kisiwani cover much of the island with many parts of the city still unexcavated. The substantial standing ruins, built of coral and lime mortar, include the Great Mosque constructed in the 11th century and considerably enlarged in the 13th century, and roofed entirely with domes and vaults, some decorated with embedded Chinese porcelain; the palace Husuni Kubwa built between c1310 and 1333 with its large octagonal bathing pool.
The Great Mosque of Kilwa Kisiwani is the oldest standing mosque on the East African coast and, with its sixteen domed and vaulted bays, has a unique plan. Its true great dome dating from the 13th was the largest dome in East Africa until the 19th century.
Day 10 (15 June 16) From Kilwa Masoko to Selous Game Reserve, Selous Wilderness Camp, FB

Selous Game Reserve
Named after the legendary British explorer, Selous Game Reserve ( three times the size of Serengeti N.P. and twice the size of Belgium ), was founded as a Reserve in 1905 by the colonial administration and later expanded to include the traditional elephant migration routes.
The Reserve provides shelter for most of Tanzania’s largest elephant population, large herds of buffalo, crocodile, hippo, a variety of 440 species of birds and over 2000 variety of plants. Lions and leopards are also present together with one of the greatest predators of Africa, the African wild dog. The park probably holds the largest concentration of this endangered animal, which hunts, in large packs and with the reputation of being among the most formidable predators.
Covering 50,000 km sq, Selous is the true African wilderness that has had missionaries, explorer and hunters from bygone days but has still managed to keep its doors closed to many. Hot volcanic springs, lagoons, the great Rufiji River and the diverse landscape makes Selous Game Reserve is a World Heritage site.
Day 12 (17 June 16) From Selous Game Reserve to Dar Es Salaam, Lighthouse Beach Resort, FB
After breakfast, drive to Dar Es Salaam. Takes about 5-6 hours. On arrival in Dar Es Salaam, check in at Lighthouse Beach Resort for overnight on FB terms.
Day 13 (18 June 16) Depart from Dar Es Salaam, transfer to the airport
Transfer to Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Married Saturday in Norway - Today safari and honeymoon in Tanzania!
This adventure package combining wildlife, culture and beach life starts with a six days safari and culture package brings you to the southern circuit including Mikumi National Park and Ruaha National Park. Visit to the orphanage in Ilula, the city life in Iringa and Dar es Salaam and relaxing days by the white beaches of Zanzibar - perfect for our "Honeymooners"!

This six days, and five nights safari gives you a taste of real wildlife in the southern safari circuit of Tanzania.
The good tarmac road takes you to Mikumi and onwards all the way to Iringa before you head for the rough road leading you in to the wilderness of Ruaha National Park. This safari is giving you a good mix of culture combined with your wildlife adventure.
Day 1 – Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park
After breakfast at the Beachcoomber Hotel, you will leave Dar es Salaam for a long, but interesting drive to Mikumi. En route you will see a lot of the rural village life in Tanzania, and pass the city of Morogoro - the agricultural city of the southern highlands where we stop for lunch. You may use this lunch to get to know more about the food culture of Tanzania.
On your way to Mikumi you pass “baboon valley” a place where you often see baboons close by or at the road while passing. If traffic treated you well, you will be in the park in good time to enjoy a nice afternoon game drive. While the sun sets, you can enjoy a cold drink with the perfect view of the waterhole where the buffaloes enjoy their mud baths and the elephants come to drink.
The coming two nights are spent at Kikoboga - Mikumi Wildlife Camp.
Day 2 – Mikumi National Park
Today you will be waking up early in the morning to go “hunting” for the predators before they go to sleep, working up an appetite for your solid breakfast. When you wake up, make sure to look out the big window to se what kind of animals are sleeping right outside your bungalow.
A full day game drive in the park which always share its abundant wildlife with the visitors. The savannah inside the park allow your eyes to spot wildlife from a great distance, giving you wonderful pictures either for your camera, or forever embedded in your memory.
Many of Mikumi’s animals are used to visitors on two legs or four tyres, so here you’ll have the opportunity to meet species like elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, and antelopes and if lucky, predators like lion and leopard. During early afternoon we’ll often find the animals hiding and resting, so we’ll have the opportunity of a swim in the pool at the lodge before an afternoon game drive. Even tonight you can enjoy the unforgettable view of the light set waterhole where the animals quietly come for drink.
Day 3 – Iringa
After breakfast at the camp, we head to Iringa, one of the main cities of the southern highlands. Here we visit Ilula orphanage - and do a cultural tour of Iringa town.
The night you spend at Wilolesi Hilltop Hotel close to Iringa city centre.
Day 4 – Ruaha National Park
After breakfast at the hotel we drive towards and into the largest national park in Tanzania, Ruaha. More than 20.000 km2, it’s larger, more wild and unspoiled than its more known “little brother” in the north – Serengeti. An afternoon game drive will make sure you understand the difference between the two very different parks, and their environment. Even the animal’s act differently to the two legged or four wheeled intruders. Tonight you will enjoy your sleep at Ruaha River Lodge.
Day 5 – Ruaha National Park
Full day of exciting game drive in Ruaha. You will early recognize one of the specialities of this park, its enormous elephants, both in size and in numbers. You will see a lot of hippos and crocodiles along the Great Ruaha River, where we’ll have a picnic lunch. In the afternoon when you are satisfied with the wildlife viewing - we head back to the camp for a romantic dinner on the sandbank.
Day 6 – Ruaha National Park
Your last full day in Ruaha - the big hunt for the animals not yet ticked of our list! Will it be early morning chase of Leopard or Cheetah - or have we already been so lucky that you choose to rest, enjoying the views from the camp, or maybe you're more adventurous and go for the walking safari? Then on to the airstrip at Msembe - for a scenic flight to Zanzibar - "The spice Island"!
Day 7 to 15 - Zanzibar
Enjoying the exotic spice island - first 4 days in Stone Town, then the rest of a adventurous Honeymoon by the azure blue sea and white beaches north east on Unguja - The main of the Zanzibar Islands.
Day 16 - Dar es Salaam
Ending the adventure of Tanzania with one day in Dar es Salaam with shopping and culture - and the important "End of stay evaluation" with Paka Adventures!

Off season adventure!
A group of 8 young Norwegians will next week start their journey into the wilderness of Southern Tanzania. With hopes of experiencing the unique wildlife adventure a safari off season can give you!
Day 1 – Drive to Mikumi National Park
You will have an early morning departure from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi, a 4 – 5 hours drive on comfortable tarmac roads. On the way you will enjoy a nice lunch where you can choose between continental or local food. You may use this lunch to get to know more about the food culture of Tanzania.
On your way to Mikumi you pass “baboon valley” a place where you often see baboons close by or at the road while passing. If traffic treated you well, you will be in the park in good time to enjoy a nice afternoon game drive. While the sun sets, you can enjoy a cold drink with the perfect view of the waterhole where the buffaloes enjoy their mud baths and the elephants come to drink.

After breakfast at the lodge, we start a long, but scenic road trip to Selous, one of the world’s largest protected wildlife areas. After passing Morogoro, Tanzanias main agricultural town, we head into, and over the Uluguru mountains.
This is a unique drive through mountain rainforest and remote villages, before reaching Selous western entry gate. You will be arriving the game reserve in the afternoon and we do a game drive through the reserve to the lodge for the next two nights - Jimbiza Lodge.
Day 4 – Selous Game Reserve
With it’s more than 50 km2 this area are larger than Belgium. A UNESCO world heritage site, Selous give you extraordinary possibilities for wildlife experiences. Since Selous is a game reserve (not a national park), we have the options of following the herds of animals outside the roads, into their natural habitats.
Your full day of game viewing always includes “hunting” for the predators. Maybe today is a lucky day, and allow us to spend time with one of the prides of lions residing in Selous. Tonight you will be accommodated again at Jimbiza Lodge by the Rufiji River, just outside the reserve on the eastern border.
Day 5 – Boat ride on Rufiji River
In the morning we spend a few hours in a bout at the river, watching hippos, crocodiles and various species of birds before heading back to Dar es Salaam. On the way you will enjoy your delicious lunchbox, and arrival in Dar es Salaam in the late afternoon.

Day 1 Home town - Arusha
You meet at your Airport for early morning flight with, via Amsterdam (or similar) to Kilimanjaro airport, near Arusha, arriving in the evening. Here you will be picked up by Paka Adventures Ltd. who will take you to the hotel that is not far from the airport.
Here it's possible to have some food before bed, waiting for those who are tired after the journey. You have a great day ahead of you tomorrow.
Day 2 Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast we drive into the Ngorongoro Crater, which once was a huge volcano. The crater is 20 km in diameter and 600 feet deep and hides a wonderful protected natural area inhabited partly by the elephants, zebras, lions and rhinos.
Also living here is the semi-nomadic Maasai tribe known worldwide for its unique clothing and culture. Tonight we overnight on the crater rim.
Day 3 Serengeti
Today, the world famous Serengeti National Park, are providing for today's memorable images and stories. Serengeti is the area where variety of nature- and animal films are recorded. The famous movie the "Lion King" is also based on landscape and nature in the Serengeti.
On our way we pass by Olduvai Gorge, the home of our forefathers, where we have found the oldest remains of our ancestors. Dinner and overnight in Serengeti.
Day 4 Serengeti
Today we will spend all day to become known in the Serengeti, and to pursue new fantastic animal experiences. If we are lucky, this can be the season to find the huge migration of millions of wildebeest and zebras.
Day 5 Serengeti - Zanzibar
If you'd like it, we can have a little drive in the park to look for the lions that are easiest to find early in the morning. Afterwards we eat breakfast and head for the airport for a 1.5 hour-long flight to Zanzibar. After a great ride with wonderful views, we are now ready to explore Zanzibar's secrets.
A guide will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel. After checking in, we leave for a guided tour of Stone Town where you will visit the Sultan's palace and the slave market, and a great trip to one of Zanzibar's many luxuriant spice plantations. You will enjoy the night at the grand hotel
Mtoni Marine, a hotel just outside of Stone Town, with a great swimming pool, AC, a small beach and two restaurants with excellent food. Here you can enjoy good food and good service the next three nights.
Day 6 Zanzibar
This is the day for learning about the history, architecture and life in Stone Town. A guide will take you to churce, museums, slave dungeons, through the narrow streets of Stone Town, and to the market itself. In addition to this you will visit one of Zanzibar's many spice farms.
Day 7 Safari Blue - Experience the wet part of Zanzibar...
Today we set sail out to sea with a dhow, an Arab sailing boat. For those who wish to explore the mangroves, there will be opportunity for canoeing in the mangroves. There are also plenty of time for swimming and exploring the exotic snorkelling paradise.
The lucky ones also experience to see the dolphins jump out of the water along the gunwale. A sight for the eye (and camera)! Included in this tour is a great lunch, based on sea secrets, exotic spices and tropical fruits. Included is also drinks served during the trip.
Day 8 Zanzibar
Today we suggest an unforgettable experience on a trip where you spend the morning and afternoon to swim with dolphins, far offshore. But to get to the big dolphin herds, we need to get up early in the morning.
After the dolphin trip you will be taken to east coast to the village Matemwe for relaxation and beach life.
Day 9 Zanzibar
This day you can relax or possibly book a trip directly from the hotel. Are you fond of diving, then Zanzibar have fantastic dive sites. Zanzibar is an archipelago that is full of opportunities.
Day 10 Zanzibar

Day 11 Zanzibar – Ruaha
After checking out of the hotel, we'll transport you to the airport for your flight to Ruaha National Park. There you will meet our vehicle who will take you on an amazing safari in the wild nature of Ruaha. Dinner and accommodation just outside the park boarders.
Day 12 Ruaha
Full day safari in Ruaha National Park. Same accommodation as the night before.
Day 13 Ruaha – Iringa
After a solid breakfast you will be heading to Iringa town where you will visit Isimila Old Age before you go and spend some time with the children at an orphanage just outside town. Tonight you will be staying in a town hotel.
Day 14 Iringa - Mikumi
Leaving Iringa after breakfast going to Mikumi. Afternoon safari in Mikumi National Park. Dinner and overnight in a lodge inside the park.
Day 15 Mikumi – Dar es Salaam
Early morning safari before breakfast. Around noon you will go to Dar es Salaam. BB accommodation at Beachcomber Hotel.
Day 16 "Dar by night!"
Resting day at the hotel before you go out to experience the rhythm of "Dar by night"!
Day 17 City tour
City tour to the village museum with cultural music and dancing, the woodcarvers market in Mwenge, textile and tourism market at Slip Way and the fish market on the way out to the village Kimbiji for fullboard accommodation at The Lighthouse Beach Resort.
Day 18 - 21 "Your home away from home!"
Enjoy the quiet peace with the breeze from the ocean and the relaxing sound of the waves washing the beach...

Off the beaten tracks - white beaches - 24 days adventure "Canadian expedition!"
This adventure package combining wildlife, culture and beach life starts with a seven days safari and culture package brings you to the southern circuit including Mikumi National Park and Ruaha National Park. Visit to the Isimila Stone age site, snake park and the city life in Iringa and Dar es Salaam.

This seven days, and six nights safari gives you a taste of real wildlife in the southern safari circuit of Tanzania.
The good tarmac road takes you to Mikumi and onwards all the way to Iringa before you head for the rough road leading you in to the wilderness of Ruaha National Park. This safari is giving you a good mix of culture combined with your wildlife adventure.
Day 1 – Iringa
After breakfast at the Jangwani Seabreeze Resort, you will leave Dar es Salaam for a long, but interesting drive to Iringa. En route you will see a lot of the rural village life in Tanzania, and pass the city of Morogoro - the agricultural city of the southern highlands. The night you spend at Wilolesi Hilltop Hotel close to Iringa city centre.
Day 2 – Ruaha National Park
After breakfast at the hotel we drive towards and into the largest national park in Tanzania, Ruaha. More than 20.000 km2, it’s larger, more wild and unspoiled than its more known “little brother” in the north – Serengeti. An afternoon game drive will make sure you understand the difference between the two very different parks, and their environment. Even the animal’s act differently to the two legged or four wheeled intruders. Tonight you will enjoy your sleep in a comfortable tent at Mwagusi Safari Camp.
Day 3 – Ruaha National Park
Full day of exciting game drive in Ruaha. You will early recognize one of the specialities of this park, its enormous elephants, both in size and in numbers. You will see a lot of hippos and crocodiles along the Great Ruaha River, where we’ll have a picnic lunch. In the afternoon when you are satisfied with the wildlife viewing - we head back to the camp for a romantic dinner on the sandbank.
Day 4 – Ruaha National Park
Your last full day in Ruaha - the big hunt for the animals not yet ticked of our list! Will it be early morning chase of Leopard or Cheetah - or have we already been so lucky that you choose to rest, enjoying the views from the camp, or maybe you're more adventurous and go for the walking safari? The last evening with dinner under the stars at Mwagusi - before a good nights rest to be ready for "the road" back to civilization.
Day 5 – Iringa
After breakfast at the camp, we head to Iringa, one of the main cities of the southern highlands. Here we visit Isimila – one of Africa’s most important stone age sites. Here the findings are thousands of stone tools and weapons more than 60.000 years old. Thereafter you will drive through and over the Udzungwa Mountains, to Mikumi National Park for overnight at Mikumi Wildlife Camp.
Day 6 – Mikumi National Park
Today you will be waking up early in the morning to go “hunting” for the predators before they go to sleep, working up an appetite for your solid breakfast. When you wake up, make sure to look out the big window to se what kind of animals are sleeping right outside your bungalow.
A full day game drive in the park which always share its abundant wildlife with the visitors. The savannah inside the park allow your eyes to spot wildlife from a great distance, giving you wonderful pictures either for your camera, or forever embedded in your memory.
Many of Mikumi’s animals are used to visitors on two legs or four tyres, so here you’ll have the opportunity to meet species like elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, and antelopes and if lucky, predators like lion and leopard. During early afternoon we’ll often find the animals hiding and resting, so we’ll have the opportunity of a swim in the pool at the lodge before an afternoon game drive. Even tonight you can enjoy the unforgettable view of the light set waterhole where the animals quietly come for drink.
Day 7 – Snake park and return to Dar es Salaam and to The Lighthouse Beach Resort
In the morning you will be visiting Mikumi Snake and Reptile Park. Believe it or not, but after all these days of safari and wildlife there are very limited chances that you have been seeing any snakes or other reptiles. After lunch on the way, we will arrive back in Dar es Salaam early afternoon, before rush hours and traffic jams. Hopefully we will get across with the ferry, and do a short 40 km drive to get to The Lighthouse Beach Resort.
Day 8 to 17 - The Lighthouse Beach Resort
Lazy days of beach life, mouthwatering food and culture at our secluded and quiet beach getaway!
